SATA – 1.5Gbps

Although it’s obvious that the current SATA drives have yet to reach the full 1.5Gbps bandwidth in a single-drive setup, price-wise, it appears that the 3.0Gbps drives are about even with the 1.5Gbps drives. For $0.41 per GB, we can see the Maxtor 1.5Gbps 300GB 7200RPM 16MB DiamondMax 10 [RTPE: 6B300S0] going for $125 shipped. We’ve also noticed that the Western Digital 1.5Gbps 74GB 10000RPM 8MB Raptor [RTPE: WD740GD] on sale for about $140 after a $20 mail-in rebate.

Another decent deal can be had on the Maxtor 1.5Gbps 300GB 7200RPM 16MB MaXLine III [RTPE: 7L300S0], which is currently priced at $109 shipped after a $50 mail-in rebate. We’re also seeing the Western Digital 1.5Gbps 320GB 7200RPM 8MB Caviar SE [RTPE: WD3200JD] that is priced at about $125, making it $0.39 per GB.

If you’re in the market for a large hard drive, Western Digital’s 1.5Gbps 400GB 7200RPM 16MB Caviar SE16 [RTPE: WD4000KD] is a great option that is going for just under an even $200, which makes that about $0.50 per GB.

Mr. Farhan, why don't you include some laptop harddrive recommendations?

    an answer would be appreciated....

We have had many requests from our readers to include laptop hard drives in our storage price guides, while we are actually in the process of addressing this request by getting them added to the RTPE. Once the laptop hard drives are added to the RTPE, they will be included in our storage price guides from then on. The time frame for this project to be completed will be in about two to three months, so please bare with us.

We appreciate you taking the time to let us know what you would like to see in our price guides.

It's been a while since NEC ND-3550A DVD-RW replaced ND-3540, but still it isn't shown on the price guides. Is there any special reason for this?

I see that it hasn't been entered into the RTPE yet and that's why it isn't showing up in the price chart. I'll contact the RTPE Admin. and have him take care of that.

Thanks for pointing that out. =)
