Huawei this morning has introduced its latest-generation MateBook D laptops. The laptops, which use processors from both AMD and Intel, as well as discrete graphics from NVIDIA, will be offered with both Microsoft’s Windows 10 operating system, as well as Linux on certain SKUs.

Huawei’s latest MateBook D14 and MateBook D15 notebooks come in an aluminum chassis that houses a 14-inch and 15.6-inch IPS Full-HD display panels respectively. The displays offer a max brightness of 250 nits and a 800:1 contrast ratio. Inside many of the systems is Intel’s quad-core 10th Generation Core i5/i7 (Comet Lake) processor paired with NVIDIA’s GeForce MX 250 GPU, 8 GB or 16 GB of DDR4 memory, as well as an a 256 GB or 512 GB PCIe SSD. Meanwhile, Huawei will also offer SKUs powered by AMD’s Ryzen 5 3500U processors with built-in Radeon Vega graphics, possibly in a bid to reduce risks associated with tight supply of processors by Intel.

When it comes to connectivity, the Huawei MateBook D14 and D15 laptops feature 2x2 Wi-Fi 5 with up to 1.73 Gbps throughput, Bluetooth 5, one USB 3.0 Type-C connector, three USB 2.0/3.0 Type-A ports, an HDMI output, and a 3.5-mm connector for headsets. The notebooks also have a fingerprint reader, a webcam that hides in a key, stereo speakers and a microphone array.

As far as portability is concerned, the MateBook D14 is 15.9 mm thick and weighs 1.38 kilograms, whereas the MateBook D15 is 16.9 mm thick and weighs 1.62 kilograms. Surprisingly, the former features a 56 Wh battery, whereas the 15-inch model comes with a smaller 42 Wh battery. In its stead, Huawei is offering a 1TB HDD.

Huawei will start sales of its new MateBook D14 and MateBook D15 laptops on December 2 in China. It is unclear whether and when the company plans to begin shipments of its new notebooks to other countries, but since Microsoft now has a license to sell software from Huawei, it is entirely possible that the new notebooks will make it to other markets at some point.

It's almost certainly a typo. The first "2" of 20510U would suggest a full generation ahead (Rocket Lake?), not Comet Lake. Since that appears to be a typo the other odd specs reported by Huawei are also suspect. Someone compiled them sloppily.

That battery config is just stupid. The machine is wider, longer, AND thicker, yet that 2.5" drive takes up SO much space they have to significantly shrink the battery.

Who even wants spinning rust anymore? Get rid of that garbage and put in a 70+wh battery.

Also, why does the I7-20510u (which doesnt exist) only have 8GB of RAM available?

Why do they bother bundling dgpu with absolutely garbage dim 1080p screen.

I'd be 1000x more interested if this was 4K and 450+ nits

Yup, the LCD, battery on the 15, and too many USB-A ports are really lame.

Thats some weird combination of specs

15" with smaller battery? why to accommodate the 2.5" HDD? I really hope they're joking here...

Core i7 is limited to 8GB and the 16GB RAM option is only for Core i5 and Ryzen 5? Where's Ryzen 7 and where's i7+16GB ?

And what about that 20510 model number ?

But seriously, With Windows 10 I wouldn't even think about any new system with 8GB of RAM, 16GB is the bare minimum now for me... they really should bump the lowest RAM from 8 to at least 12GB...

@Anton: What makes you think they only offer the Ryzen based model to reduce Intel supply risks?

The last Ryzen powered Matebook D sold very well afaik (was in the #1 spot for Amazon uk, de and fr), plus with Huawei having Pariah status in the US at the moment, financial incentives from Intel are most likely out of question.

So, what reason would Huawei have to not make more money by offering a choice ?
